SALT vs. ALVIC vs. Tafisa: What's the Difference?
If you're considering modern cabinetry or custom closets in Naples, there's a good chance you'll come across names like SALT, ALVIC and Tafisa.
At first glance, they can all look like decorative panel products.
But they're not all the same.
The surface technology, texture, sheen, available designs and intended applications can be very different — and those differences become especially noticeable when the material is used for large slab doors, closets, built-ins and contemporary cabinetry.
At Ervani Design Haus, we work with multiple decorative panel options because there isn't one material that's right for every project.
Here's how we look at them.
First: What Is a Decorative Panel?
Unlike a traditional painted cabinet door, decorative panels arrive with the finished surface already applied to the substrate.
That makes it possible to create incredibly consistent wood looks, super-matte colors, high-gloss finishes, textured surfaces and other contemporary designs.
They're especially popular for modern kitchens, closets, entertainment centers, bars and built-ins.
But saying something is a "laminate cabinet" doesn't tell you very much.
There are different surface technologies, substrates and manufacturing processes — which is exactly why comparing the actual products matters.
Tafisa: A Great Foundation for Modern Cabinetry & Closets
Tafisa is a well-established manufacturer of thermally fused laminate, or TFL, decorative panels.
During manufacturing, resin-impregnated decorative layers are permanently thermofused to particleboard or MDF using heat and pressure. The texture of the finished surface is created during that pressing process.
Tafisa offers more than 160 standard color and texture combinations, including realistic woodgrains and embossed-in-register textures.
For us, Tafisa can make a lot of sense for:
Custom closets
Cabinet interiors
Built-ins
Contemporary cabinetry
Wood-look designs
Projects where budget is an important consideration
It's a versatile material with a huge selection.
And importantly, using Tafisa doesn't automatically mean you're getting a "cheap cabinet."
The design, fabrication, edge treatment, hardware and construction of the finished cabinetry still matter enormously.
SALT: When the Surface Becomes Part of the Design
SALT opens up a different world of decorative surfaces.
Their collection includes high-gloss and super-matte panels, HPL, skin laminates, concrete composite panels, structured veneers and other specialty surfaces.
This gives us options when we want the cabinetry material itself to become a design feature.
Some of SALT's super-matte panels, for example, incorporate soft-touch, anti-fingerprint surfaces with UV and color-fading protection and enhanced scratch resistance.
They also offer finishes that go well beyond traditional wood looks, including metallic-inspired surfaces and specialty textures.
That's where SALT becomes particularly interesting for Ervani projects.
We can use the material to create a very clean European-style kitchen, a dramatic bar, a contemporary closet or a built-in that doesn't look like conventional painted cabinetry.
ALVIC: High Gloss, Super Matte & Realistic Texture
ALVIC is another material we love when the surface finish is an important part of the design.
Rather than one single finish, ALVIC has several distinct surface technologies.
LUXE creates a high-gloss lacquered surface with a mirror-like appearance.
ZENIT is ALVIC's super-matte lacquered surface with a soft, velvety feel.
SYNCRON focuses on highly decorative textured surfaces designed to create a more natural appearance.
ALVIC's ZENIT surface also incorporates anti-fingerprint characteristics and is engineered for resistance to scratching and abrasion.
For a contemporary kitchen or built-in, these finishes can create a very different appearance from a standard TFL panel.
So Is SALT or ALVIC "Better" Than Tafisa?
That's not really the right question.
They're tools for different designs.
If we're designing a large custom closet with extensive shelving and cabinetry, Tafisa may give us exactly the appearance, durability and value we're looking for.
If we're designing a dramatic contemporary kitchen with large slab fronts, we might prefer a SALT super-matte finish.
If the design calls for an extremely refined high-gloss surface or a specific textured finish, ALVIC may be the better fit.
Sometimes we'll even use different materials within the same home.
Good design isn't about choosing the most expensive material. It's about choosing the right material for the application.
Why These Materials Are So Popular in Modern Naples Homes
Southwest Florida interiors have moved far beyond the traditional all-white kitchen.
We're seeing homeowners interested in warmer woods, matte finishes, European-inspired cabinetry, textured surfaces, darker colors and combinations of materials.
Decorative panels give us another way to create those looks.
They can also provide something natural wood can't: consistency.
Natural wood changes from board to board. Grain, color and character are part of what makes real wood beautiful.
A decorative panel allows us to create a much more controlled and consistent appearance when that's what the design calls for.
Neither is inherently better.
They're different aesthetics.

This is one category where photos online really don't tell the whole story.
You need to touch them.
A super-matte surface, embossed wood texture and high-gloss lacquered panel can look completely different once you see them at full scale and place them next to stone, flooring and hardware.
